The first of potentially many posts related to the enigma that was Brian Clough. There are only a handful of managers that I can think of that if I heard their name because they were about to be interviewed - my eyes and ears would be glued to watching and listening. Clough probably tops that list with Mourinho, Shankly, Holloway and Docherty amongst the other runners for different reasons.
My belief is that Clough could have been a nightmare to work for because if he did not believe in his way you were not going to be in his team and it would be an uncomfortable relationship. For the best part though, nobody can deny that his way was right regardless as to what any of us individually might think - just look at the trophies that he won and for the clubs he won them for - could a Derby or Forest or a team of that size do as well today without a multi-millionaire Arab or Russian supplying an endless pit of money to the club - I very much doubt it.
It has also been pretty much proven that it was Peter Taylor that was as much the mastermind behind the successes as Clough and Taylor had the midas touch with signings for a long while. I cannot help think though how I would feel as a Derby fan though when Clough left and the success he had a few years later just down the road with Nottingham Forest. Of course I would be happy with the team that he delivered to Derby and the Championship that they won. But I would also be green with envy with then what happened at the City Ground just a few short years later.
Some of this story was of course highlighted in the film "The Dammed United" with his resignation at Derby and then amazingly having it accepted by chairman Sam Longsdon. Between Derby and Forest there were a few wilderness years with Brighton and of course the infamous short period at Leeds but then to repeat the Derby success formula at Forest in getting them promoted and leading them to a title as well will probably never ever be repeated especially when you add on the two European Cups as well.
There have been many pieces of Clough being interviewed over the years that are very well known and have been aired many, many times. Parts of those interviews will no doubt appear in other clips but for the best part the video that I am looking to add to the articles featuring Clough will feature the lesser known footage (at least as far as I am concerned).
